Water leak at the Louvre Museum: Hundreds of books damaged

A water leak at the Louvre Museum in France has reportedly damaged approximately 400 rare books in the Egyptian antiquities section.

Approximately 400 rare books in the Egyptian antiquities section of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, were damaged due to a water leak caused by aging pipes. Francis Steinbock, Deputy Director General of the Louvre, stated that the water leak affected one of the three rooms in the library of the Egyptian antiquities section, adding that the room contained between 300 and 400 artifacts and that inspections were ongoing. Steinbock claimed that the books affected by the leak were not valuable and noted that the plumbing issues had been known for years. Steinbock said maintenance and repairs are planned for September 2026.

The Louvre Museum, which welcomes thousands of visitors every day and displays approximately 35,000 artifacts, was robbed on October 19. Police arrested four people in connection with the robbery.
