Japan has introduced new warning signs aimed at protecting tourists from bears

The Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) has introduced new warning signs aimed at protecting local and foreign tourists from increasing bear attacks across the country.

Bear attacks reaching record levels in Japan prompted the Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) to take action. The JTA has introduced new warning signs aimed at protecting domestic and foreign tourists from bear encounters and attacks. Making the designed warning signs available for free on its website, the JTA stated, “To ensure the safety of visitors, we want these warning signs to be used at tourist spots where bears are likely to be seen.”

The signs, which aim to warn both Japanese and foreign visitors who do not speak the language with clear visuals, highlight the risks of feeding bears, approaching bears, and littering.

Bear attacks in Japan reached record levels in 2025. At least 13 people lost their lives in bear attacks, while at least 217 others were injured.
