The touristy Terezvaros district of Budapest, Hungary's capital, has voted to ban daily rental accommodation on the grounds that it drives up housing prices. The result of the vote will be known in 10 days.
In the Terezvaros district, also known as “District VI”, located in the Pest region on the eastern side of the city in the Hungarian capital Budapest, local authorities have launched a referendum on banning the short-term rental of housing from 2026. The vote, which started on Monday and will continue until the evening of September 15, could lead to a ban on short-term rentals.
Residents of Terezvaros started voting online on September 2 by verifying their address and identity. Residents can also vote in tents set up in Lövölde Square and Jkai Square every day between 08.00 and 19.00 local time. Residents who support the referendum point out that short-term apartment or house rentals through platforms such as Airbnb and Booking have increased housing prices in the region.
