South Aegean is the EU region with the highest tourism intensity

In the Greek region with islands such as
Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes, there was an average of 117 overnight stays per
inhabitant in 2023, according to the Federal Statistical Office based on
Eurostat data. The number of overnight stays per inhabitant is a common
indicator of the intensity of tourism in a region.
On the Ionian Islands, which include Corfu, there were
around 98 overnight stays per person. The Italian province of Bolzano-Alto
Adige came in at 68, the Croatian Adriatic coast at 67 and the Balearic Islands
at 57. By comparison, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was the region with the
highest tourism intensity within Germany with a good 18 overnight stays per
inhabitant and ranked 17th in the EU comparison.
Around 262,000 tourists per day spend the
night in the Canary Islands
In terms of absolute figures, the Canary Islands are the
most visited destination in the EU; in relative terms, the Spanish archipelago
ranked 10th in terms of tourism intensity in 2023 with 43 overnight stays per
capita. Around 95.6 million overnight stays were recorded there in 2023. On
average, around 262,000 people stayed overnight on one of the islands per day.
It was followed by the Croatian Adriatic coast (87.3 million overnight stays),
Catalonia (85.6 million), Île-de-France with the greater Paris area (85.2
million) and Andalusia in southern Spain (73.9 million).
