In 2024, there were 1.19 billion personal
and professional trips in the EU, a 4.4% increase from the 1.14 billion
registered in 2023. Of the total, 850 million were domestic trips (71% of the
total) and 250 million were foreign trips within the EU (21%), which means 92%
of the trips made by EU residents were intra-EU.
Among EU countries, the highest shares of domestic
trips in the total number of trips were recorded in Romania (90%), Spain (88%),
and France, Portugal and Greece (each 85%). The lowest share was in Luxembourg
at only 5%, followed by Belgium (23%) and Malta (35%).
Conversely, these 3 EU countries registered the
highest share of foreign trips within the EU - Luxembourg (78%), Belgium (62%)
and Malta (48%) – while Romania (9%), France (9%) and Spain (8%) had the lowest
shares at this level.
Although the number of domestic trips was higher,
total expenditure was higher for foreign trips. In 2024, EU residents spent
€257.2 billion in domestic trips and €360.7 billion in foreign trips.
In domestic trips, accommodation and transport made up
more than half of the expenditure, respectively 33.9% (€87.2 billion) and 21.3%
(€54.8 billion). During foreign trips, EU residents spent relatively more on
accommodation (35.4%; €127.7 billion) and transport (31.9%; €115.1 billion).
