Launch Event of the Global Report on Women in Tourism Transport

UN Tourism and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) are hosting a Launch Event for the first-ever Global Report on Women in Tourism Transport.

Transport is the backbone of the global tourism sector, yet women remain significantly underrepresented, particularly in technical and leadership roles. This study explores the participation of women across air, land and water passenger transport, uncovering the legal, cultural and structural barriers, such as safety concerns and lack of infrastructure, that restrict gender equality.

Why This Report Matters?

This joint report by UN Tourism and the ITF provides a data-driven roadmap and supporting Action Plan to empower women in the transport workforce.

Shaikha N. Al Nuwais, Secretary-General, UN Tourism, said: “Addressing this is not just about fairness. It is about building a stronger sector. This report gives us the clarity to act and the responsibility to do so.”

Highlights

Employment data: For the first time national data on women working in air, land and water passenger transport will be presented.

Barriers to Entry: Harassment and violence, the need for decent sanitation and the "glass ceiling" in boardrooms will be addressed.

Action Plan: Strategic recommendations for gender-responsive laws, safe working environments and leadership training.

The industry faces growing labour shortages, achieving gender equality is not just a matter of fairness it is essential for building a resilient, future-ready tourism sector.
