Ghana rolls out free-visa policy for all Africans to boost tourism and investment

In a landmark move to solidify Ghana’s position as a beacon of Pan-Africanism, President John Dramani Mahama has announced the implementation of a free-visa policy for all African nationals. This took effect May 25, 2026, marking the AU Day — a highly symbolic gesture intended to honor continental unity, identity, and heritage.

Under the new policy, African travelers heading to Ghana will be able to apply for and receive e-visas online entirely free of charge. The initiative is a cornerstone of Ghana’s broader e-visa reform program scheduled for deployment.

“As a cradle of Pan-Africanism, Ghana believes it has a historic responsibility to remain open to Africans from across our continent,” President Mahama stated. “We are firmly of the view that African Governments must accelerate the integration agenda for which Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah toiled and sacrificed.”

An Economic and Diplomatic Catalyst

Administration officials emphasize that the free-visa regime is far more than a diplomatic gesture; it is a calculated strategic economic move. By removing traditional entry barriers, the policy aims to achieve three core objectives:

Advance Pan-African Unity: Fostering seamless movement across borders to realize the decades-long dream of a unified continent.

Supercharge the Tourism Sector: Inviting a massive wave of leisure and cultural travelers who previously faced restrictive visa processes.

Drive Inbound Investment: Positioning Ghana as a friction-free, accessible hub for African entrepreneurs, startups, and established conglomerates looking to expand.

Safeguarding National Security

Addressing immediate questions regarding border control and regional stability, President Mahama reassured the public that open borders would not mean compromised safety.

“Adequate systems have been put in place to vet prospective visitors and to ensure that the security of our nation is not compromised,” the President stated, pointing to integrated digital vetting protocols embedded within the new e-visa infrastructure.

The announcement has already triggered widespread praise across the continent. Tourism enthusiasts, hospitality leaders, and chamber of commerce representatives have heavily commended the policy, describing it as a massive, transformative boost that could set a new standard for intra-African travel and economic cooperation.
