2 min read

Nine people on board a Learjet 60 private jet that took off from the U.S. state of Florida en route to the Bahamas lost their lives when the aircraft crashed into a residential area and caught fire.

The death toll has been confirmed in the private jet crash that occurred in Palm Beach County, Florida. The Learjet 60, which had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas en route to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, crashed into the Cresthaven residential area near Palm Beach County, Florida, at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time. A massive explosion occurred after the plane hit the ground, and the wreckage was engulfed in flames. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people on board lost their lives. Following the crash, hundreds of people in the area were evacuated, and aviation authorities launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

Air traffic control recordings released after the crash revealed what happened in the final minutes before the plane crashed. The pilot, who contacted the Miami Air Traffic Control Center, reported that the aircraft was experiencing light, manageable clear icing and moderate turbulence. After rain began in the area, the pilot requested permission to climb to a higher altitude but shortly thereafter declared an emergency as the aircraft rapidly lost altitude. In the pilot’s radio transmission, he was heard saying, “We’re descending 8,000 feet per minute. Help, help! We’re descending 10,000 feet per minute.” In the final moments before control was lost, the pilot’s words, “We’re in a stall; we’re descending 20,000 feet per minute. We’re going to crash,” were recorded.

Following the crash, a large-scale evacuation was initiated due to damage to homes and infrastructure in the area where the wreckage landed. Palm Beach County 3rd District Commissioner Joel Flores, one of the first local officials to arrive at the scene, stated that approximately 600 people needed a safe shelter where they could spend the night.
