The Italian Ministry of Culture announced that one worker lost his life in a workplace accident that occurred late last night at the world-famous Colosseum.
A workplace accident occurred at the world-famous historic Colosseum in Rome, the capital of Italy. The Italian Ministry of Culture announced that a 22-year-old worker died after falling from a height of approximately 10 meters while installing a new lighting system at the Colosseum late last night. The ministry reported that, as a sign of respect for the deceased worker, a section of the Colosseum has been closed to visitors today following the accident.
Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli said in a statement, “This is a tragic incident that has shocked and deeply shaken us.”
Italy’s largest labor union, the Italian General Confederation of Labor (CGIL), reacted to the partial closure of the Colosseum, arguing that the entire site should remain closed for the day. CGIL Rome General Secretary Natale di Cola said, “We expect Minister Giuli to clarify the incident and issue an order to completely close the Colosseum.”
The 2,000-year-old Colosseum, the largest amphitheater of the Roman Empire and once the site of gladiator fights, executions, and animal hunts, is known today as one of Rome’s most important tourist attractions.
