Bad news for tourism: The largest-ever price hike for European flights is coming

1 min read

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary warned that airfare prices in Europe could see their largest-ever increase in 2027.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels on October 20, O’Leary said, “Over the next 12 months, you will see ticket prices rise by 10%, 15%, maybe even 20%.”

Citing rising jet fuel prices due to tensions in the Middle East as the main reason for the increase, O’Leary noted that airlines’ fuel hedging protections will largely expire as of April 2027. He said that even Ryanair itself has 85% of its 2027 fuel needs unhedged.

O’Leary stated that a ticket price increase is inevitable due to rising costs, shrinking capacity, and higher aviation taxes.
