Grandmothers turned a town into a tourism destination

Grandmothers turned a town into a tourism destination

The quiet town of Alhaurín de la Torre in Spain’s Andalusia region has become a focal point for both local and foreign tourists thanks to a striking initiative.

Struggling to cope with Andalusia’s scorching summer heat, the Alhaurín de la Torre City Council had been using massive plastic tarps every year to shade the main shopping streets. However, local women put a stop to this method, which was both aesthetically unappealing and turned the streets into what looked like greenhouses. The women, whom the public dubbed the “Unstoppable Grandmas,” proposed the idea of creating hand-knitted shade structures instead of using plastic.

The project, which began with the collection of scrap yarn from homes, old fabrics, and donations from neighbors, quickly gained momentum. The result of the women’s months of tireless work transformed the area into a massive open-air art gallery.

The streets, adorned with Andalusian motifs and colorful designs, also garnered significant attention on social media. Thousands of tourists who saw the photos began adding this town to their itineraries when visiting Málaga.
