Spain experienced the hottest summer in its history during the 2026 season

1 min read

The Spanish Meteorological Institute reported that the summer of 2026 was the hottest in the past 65 years.

According to data released by the Spanish Meteorological Institute, the record for the longest heat wave—previously set at 41 days in 2022—reached 61 days this year. While the average temperature nationwide was measured at 24.5 degrees, it was reported that this figure was 2.4 degrees above seasonal norms. It was noted that heat waves continued into September, affecting 16 cities. The institute highlighted that all of the 10 hottest summers on record have occurred in the 21st century and that the duration of the summer season is gradually lengthening.

The statement noted that, thanks to rainfall during the winter months, water levels in reservoirs remained above 62 percent, thereby preventing a drinking water crisis. However, it was reported that widespread wildfires broke out in many regions, particularly in Madrid and Aragon, due to the record-breaking heat across the country.
