In the financial year (FY) 25, TUI lowered single-use plastic consumption in its own and managed hotels to 40 grams per guest night, representing an estimated 13 per cent reduction compared to FY24. Since 2022, plastic consumption per guest night has now fallen by around 30 per cent across TUI's owned and managed hotels.
Examples from across the portfolio demonstrate the impact of local initiatives. At TUI BLUE hotels, the use of plastic water bottles has been reduced by almost 50 per cent. In Türkiye, TUI BLUE hotels cut plastic use from 98 grams per guest night in FY24 to 50 grams per guest night in FY25. The reduction has been achieved through the introduction of water dispensers, refillable bottles, reusable glasses and further measures to eliminate unnecessary single-use plastics. These include removing plastic straws, stirrers, balloons, plastic cups, laundry bags and most single-use condiment packaging. In line with the motto “avoid, reuse, replace”, TUI's plastic reduction approach prioritises reusable solutions over replacing one disposable product with another.
At the same time, the company is expanding measures to address microplastic pollution. Following the successful introduction of microfibre filters on cruise ships, TUI has now begun installing the technology in hotels to help prevent plastic microfibres from entering marine ecosystems and threatening biodiversity.
To help prevent microplastic pollution, TUI has continued the rollout of Cleaner Seas Group's INDIKON microfibre filters in washing machine wastewater systems. Independent laboratory testing found that the filters can capture up to 99 per cent of the microfibres released during the washing process, preventing them from entering waterways. The collected microfibres can then be recycled as part of a closed-loop system. The rollout has expanded to selected hotels in destinations including Spain, Greece, Italy, Morocco and Türkiye.
Reducing plastic is an important focus of the TUI Sustainability Agenda (‘People, Planet, Progress’). As a member of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI) led by the UN Environment Programme, TUI has committed to eliminating problematic and unnecessary plastic packaging by 2030. The initiative brings together players in the tourism industry to combat plastic pollution and promote a circular economy.
