In 2025, there were 1.20 billion personal and professional trips by residents in the EU, a 1.4% increase from 2024 (+17 million trips). Of the total, 848 million were domestic trips (70% of the total) and 264 million were foreign trips within the EU (22%), which means 92% of the trips made by EU residents were intra-EU.

Among EU countries, the highest shares of domestic trips of the total number of trips were recorded in Romania (89%), Spain (87%), and Greece, France and Portugal (each 85%). The lowest share was in Luxembourg at only 5%, followed by Belgium (29%) and Malta (32%). 8% of trips had a destination outside the EU, of which less than half were outside Europe.

Although domestic trips outnumbered foreign trips, total expenditure was higher for foreign trips. In 2025, EU residents spent €266.2 billion on domestic trips and €379.4 billion on foreign trips.

For domestic trips, accommodation and transport made up more than half of the expenditure, 34% (€90.3 billion) and 21% (€56.0 billion), respectively. During foreign trips, EU residents spent more on accommodation (35%; €131.3 billion) and transport (32%; €121.5 billion) than they did on domestic trips.
